In commemoration of the statue's unveiling, Kansas Air National Guard played the national anthem, and those in attendance recited the pledge of allegiance. The celebration arrived weeks following Earhart's 85th anniversary of her mysterious disappearance at 39. She was accompanied by navigator Fred Noonan at the time.
Florida also designed a female addition to Statuary Corridor this calendar year, adding Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, who was a trainer, civil legal rights activist, and presidential adviser. Bethune is the only black man or woman featured in the corridor.
