'Fingers crossed': Novak Djokovic hopes he might play in US Open

The Serbian tennis star withdrew from the Cincinnati Masters due to his unvaccinated status and has just two weeks until the U.S. Open’s draw.
Djokovic is unable to compete in the United States due to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s policy barring unvaccinated non-U.S. citizens from entering the country.

On Thursday, the CDC loosened its COVID-19 safety recommendations, creating hope that restrictions would be rescinded allowing tennis fans to see Djokovic compete later this month.
Tennis legend and commentator John McEnroe called Djokovic’s inability to compete “B.S.”
"These politicians are getting in the way too much. They did it in Australia. Let’s let the guy come in and play in the U.S. I mean come on. This is ridiculous," McEnroe said, per Online News 72h. "But I don’t make those decisions. I hope someone makes the right one and allows him to play. That’s my personal opinion."
Djokovic said he is preparing for the U.S. Open as if he will be allowed to compete.
"I am preparing as if I will be allowed to compete, while I await to hear if there is any room for me to travel to US. Fingers crossed!" Djokovic tweeted.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams lifted a ban on unvaccinated athletes playing in his city in March.
