When Major League Baseball manager Dusty Baker learned there were no U.S.-born black athletes on the rosters of the Houston Astros or the Philadelphia Phillies during this year’s World Series, he said he was “ashamed of the game.”

“Nah, don’t tell me that. That’s terrible for the state of the game. Wow! Terrible,” Baker told USA Today. “Quote me. I am ashamed of the game.”

As manager of the Astros, Baker suggested that the situation would be short-lived, however.

“There is help on the way. You can tell by the number of African-American No. 1 draft choices,” Baker noted. “The academies are producing players. So hopefully in the near future we won’t have to talk about this anymore or even be in this situation.’’

While the Astros’ manager’s name is being tossed around as a future Hall of Famer, Baker said he did not have his hopes set on it.

“If [I] make the Hall of Fame, fine. If I don’t, that’s fine too,” Baker said. “I know I’ve done my best. And I know more than anybody how America is. I really do. I’m not bitter about it. I just know how it is, man.’’

Should Baker, 73, lead his team to a 2022 World Series victory, he would be the oldest manager to accomplish the feat.
