Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) says Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) is feeling alienated from the Democratic Party as it goes "further and further to the left."

The senator would not commit to running for reelection to the Senate as a Democrat in 2024 Sunday, leading to speculation about his future.

"He is seeing the Democrat party go further and further to the left. Further away from the values of West Virginia," Gingrich said on Online News 72h Channel's Fox and Friends Monday.

Gingrich also sees Manchin's willingness to negotiate on the debt ceiling with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy as a "very important signal." He believes it indicates Manchin is pushing back on his party as a centrist.

"He would be a serious force, and he wants to make a difference. He is a serious man," Gingrich said. "This is a big first step."

The former house speaker says Manchin and other moderate senators, such as Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), could work with McCarthy to form an alliance to items passed.

Gingrich has been a vocal supporter of McCarthy as house speaker, saying Sunday that he believes the California Republican "has done very well" so far in his term.
