House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) returned to his home state on Saturday to rally state Republicans, where the party has struggled against state Democrats for years.

McCarthy's visit on Saturday marked the first time he addressed the Republicans in the state since becoming House speaker. While the state party has not won a single statewide race since 2006, McCarthy pointed to how he was able to become House speaker thanks to a five-seat majority by Republicans, arguing that the party can still be relevant in a state heavily controlled by Democrats, according to Politico.

“Do not believe we cannot win here,” McCarthy said. “We won a majority in the House by defeating the speaker in this state by winning five more Congressional seats in California."

Prior to serving, McCarthy worked in the Assembly as the Republican leader in Sacramento, California.

“He may be the highest-ranking Republican in the nation,” said California Republican Party Chair Jessica Millan Patterson. “But as a California Republican, he will always be one of us.”

McCarthy's visit to his home state comes ahead of the primary season, where Republicans will select their candidate for the 2024 presidential election. While McCarthy did joke about Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), and California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), he refrained from discussing the next presidential election.
