The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library's sign was vandalized on Sunday morning ahead of Gov. Ron DeSantis's (R-FL) remarks at the venue hours later.

In a photo released by the Simi Valley Police Department, the sign can be seen with the words "Ron DeFascist" written in spray paint.

Police said that at 7:27 a.m., library employees discovered one of the entrance signs had been vandalized.

"The graffiti was done in black spray paint and read, 'Ron DeFascist,'" read the department's press release.

SVPD reported that "the Library employees were able to remove the graffiti ahead of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ visit later today."

According to the department, the sign was vandalized overnight, thus there were no witnesses. It further said, "There is no indication of threats or any other crimes."

"It was unfortunate that the Reagan Library sign was vandalized but thankfully we were able to clean it up before we opened to the public (or before the event started). We believe in free speech and always allow protestors to protest on our campus, but we never support vandalization of public or private property," the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute's chief marketing officer, Melissa Giller, told the Washington Examiner.

DeSantis spoke at an event at 12:30 p.m. that afternoon to promote his new book, The Courage to Be Free: Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival.

The Florida governor used the opportunity to tout his administration's successes, slamming one of his biggest critics, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), without naming him.

"I know you guys have a lot of problems out here, but your governor is very concerned about what we're doing in Florida, so I figured I'd have to come by," he joked.

"You've seen massive gains in states like Florida, who are governed according to the driving principles that President Reagan held dear," DeSantis told the crowd.

"We have had a great experiment, a great test in governance philosophies," he explained. "If you look over the last four years, we've witnessed a great American exodus from states governed by leftist politicians imposing leftist ideology and delivering poor results."

DeSantis's office did not respond to the Washington Examiner's request for comment.

The governor is widely expected to announce a run for president in 2024 this summer and is one of the only hypothetical Republican candidates polling close to former President Donald Trump. In some polls, DeSantis has surpassed Trump.
