Sen. Jacky Rosen declares reelection bid for vulnerable Democratic seat

Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) debuted her 2024 reelection bid Wednesday, seeking to defend one of the most vulnerable Senate seats held by Democrats.

Casting herself as a champion of the working class, Rosen declared there was still more work to do and warned her supporters she could face fierce competition from Republicans.

"I ran for office to solve problems, fight for hardworking Nevada families, and make a real difference in people’s lives. Our work in the U.S. Senate is just getting started — that’s why I’m officially launching my reelection campaign today!" Rosen announced.

Her colleague, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), successfully staved off a challenge from Republican Adam Laxalt during the 2022 midterm cycle. As Rosen noted, the race was very tight and took days to be called by news outlets.

"With so many important fights ahead, I need your support to win in battleground Nevada. Last year’s Senate race was decided by 7,928 votes, and it could be just as competitive in 2024," Rosen added.

Nevada is widely regarded as a battleground state, though Democrats appear to have an edge, having defended the Senate seat in 2022 and winning the presidential election in 2020. Last cycle, Gov. Joe Lombardo (R-NV) managed to eke out a win.

Rosen has emerged as one of the more centrist members within the Democratic Senate caucus and has bucked her party in the past. Recently, she joined Republicans, along with Cortez Masto, in voting to nix the Biden administration's Waters of the United States rule. President Joe Biden is expected to veto that measure.

Given the Democrats' slim 51-49 Senate majority, the Nevada race could prove paramount.

Democrats are facing one of the toughest Senate maps in decades during the 2024 cycle. They will be forced to defend 23 seats, three of which are controlled by Democratic-aligned independent senators. Republicans only have to defend 11.
