The European Weightlifting Federation (EWF) strongly condemns the incident that happened during the opening ceremony of the European Weightlifting Championship in Yerevan yesterday, when a person set fire to the flag of Azerbaijan, the federation’s statement said.

The federation “considers this extremely serious and painful gesture as an attack against the integrity of sporting values and the universal principles of fair play”.

“The European Weightlifting Federation immediately responded to this incident, expressing its firm position towards the Organizing Committee and asking for additional guarantees for the safety of all participants in this tournament. “The European Weightlifting Federation has always been with the delegation of the Republic of Azerbaijan, expressing its full solidarity and support to the athletes, coaches and officials,” the statement said.

At the same time, the federation considers that “this incident is isolated and will follow the implementation of additional measures urgently required from the Organizing Committee”.

Expressing regret that the Azerbaijani delegation “had to leave the competition”, the federation also notes that it “respects it”. “We were directly involved in ensuring all security conditions for the delegation until it left Armenia,” the statement said.

The European Weightlifting Federation is also considering the possibility of adopting additional measures in the context of what happened.

The federation promises to participate in all the events held within the framework of this championship “until the departure of the delegations to ensure the observance of all security conditions of the teams”.

“The European Weightlifting Federation remains in solidarity with the Azerbaijan national team and the federation and is available for any assistance required in the spirit of sport and fair play,” the statement said.
